Twelve steps to better decisions:

  1. Keep the goal in mind.

  2. Gather & analyze information.

  3. List options & possible outcomes.

  4. Determine outcome probabilities.

  5. List possible consequences and benefits for each outcome.

  6. Do cost-benefit analysis for outcomes.

  7. Look at changing the probabilities.

  8. Examine legal/moral issues.

  9. Listen to a devil's advocate (or be one yourself).

  10. Is it worth the risk?

  11. Can you tolerate a bad outcome?

  12. Put it together and decide.

Questions to ask before making a major life change:

  1. What do I want from this change?

  2. How badly do I want it?

  3. What is the probability I will get it?

  4. What side effects might come along?

  5. How serious are the side effects?

  6. What are the probabilities of the side effects?

  7. What might it cost (money, time, danger, relationships etc.)?

  8. How can I improve my chances?

  9. Is the hoped for result worth the risk?
